Heritage Tour
This tour will bring you through the history of the Singapore Botanic Gardens since it was established by the Agri-Horticultural Society in 1859. Learn about its influential English Garden style from the 18th century through its landscape design and historical landmarks in the vicinity, such as Ridley Hall (1882) and Holttum Hall (1921). Apart from the rich heritage, this tour will also cover interesting living collections that have been planted over decades of history.
The experience will include discovering more about the Gardens’ important role in fostering agricultural development in the region through collecting, growing, experimenting and distributing potentially useful plants. One such success was the introduction, experimentation and promotion of Hevea brasiliensis (Pará Rubber) which became a major crop that transformed the region. The other is the Gardens’ spearheaded work in raising orchids in aseptic media and founding of the region’s orchid breeding industry.
