Seed Banking
Our Seed Bank is a research and education facility that focuses on plant conservation by preserving the seeds and germplasm of plants in Southeast Asia.
The Singapore Botanic Gardens Seed Bank serves as a crucial repository for Southeast Asia's plant diversity, preserving seeds from species in the Southeast Asian region threatened by habitat loss and climate change.
Operating with advanced technology and strict scientific protocols, the seed bank carefully processes and stores seeds in controlled sub-zero environments to maintain their viability for decades. Each collection is meticulously documented, creating a comprehensive database that supports both conservation efforts and ongoing research into tropical plant biology.
The Gardens' Seed Bank actively seeks collaboration with regional and international partners in areas of seed banking, cryopreservation research, and capacity building to improve conservation outcomes.
The Seed Bank also has an interpretative gallery which introduces the Seed Bank and explains its importance to plant conservation and research in Singapore and the region.
