8th Global Botanic Gardens Congress
Singapore | 5 – 10 August 2024
The Singapore Botanic Gardens was honoured to organise the 8th Global Botanic Gardens Congress and co-host the event with Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI). Held in Singapore for the first time, the Congress brought together 900 delegates from 73 countries—including 250 online participants—under the theme "Botanic Gardens: People and Plants for a Sustainable Future". Participants exchanged ideas, shared best practice and strengthened collaborations in plant conservation, research, education and public engagement through seven plenaries and panel discussions, 175 concurrent session talks, 21 workshops, and congress tours showcasing Singapore's rich botanical heritage and innovative approaches to urban greening.

Key themes explored included green and sustainable cities, plant diversity and conservation, gardens for the future, and engaging communities. Delegates emphasised the importance of data-driven decision making, stepping outside garden walls to connect with communities, enabling resilient urban landscapes, and sharing knowledge responsibly across the global network. Insights gained from the Congress will inform Singapore Botanic Gardens' future work in conservation, education and public engagement, whilst strengthening its role as an active contributor to the global botanic gardens community.
